![]() Even though the two books include the same story and were published nearly concurrently, the bodies of text contain notable differences. In scholarly circles, these novels have become known as the Holt text and the Heinemann text, respectively. While that publication was in the works, Wells also solicited another publisher in London-William Heinemann-who, just three weeks after the American release, published a different version of the novel, titled The Time Machine, An Invention. Each iteration of the story was so well received that Wells approached the American publisher Henry Holt to print it as a novel by the same name, which was accomplished at the beginning of May that year. After appearing, in part, in a revised form six years later as The Time Traveler’s Story in the National Observer, the story was revised and serialized yet again in 1895 within the periodical The New Review, this time with the title The Time Machine. The Time Machine, included within this book, originated as a short story titled The Chronic Argonauts in a self-published literary journal Wells formed during his early twenties in 1888. ![]() Though they appreciate how prophetic Wells’s work has proven to be, few may realize how prolific the author was, and how complicated his publishing history has been.
